Grinding Whole Grains Using Vitamix Blender

Grinding whole wheat berries using the grain bin attachment on a Vitamix blender is a simple process. Follow these step-by-step instructions:

Prepare the wheat berries: Measure the desired amount of whole wheat berries that you want to grind. It's best to start with small batches to ensure even grinding.

Attach the grain bin: Place the grain bin onto the base of your Vitamix blender. Ensure that it is securely locked in place.

Set up the blender: Make sure your Vitamix blender is clean and dry. Attach the appropriate blade assembly to the blender base if it's not already attached.

Fill the grain bin: Open the lid of the grain bin and pour the measured wheat berries into the bin. Be careful not to overfill it; leave some space to allow for proper blending- do not fill the bin over half-way.

Close the lid: Securely close the lid of the grain bin to prevent any wheat berries from escaping during the grinding process, I also change the standard cap to the tamper at this point.

Select the appropriate speed: Turn on your Vitamix blender and select the appropriate speed setting for grinding grains. I like to start on a lower setting around 4-5 and work up to the highest setting to ensure a smooth and even consistency.  Use the Tamper to ensure all berries are reaching the blending mechanism.

Start blending: Once you've selected the speed setting, gradually increase the speed to its maximum setting. Allow the blender to run for about 1-2 minutes, or until the wheat berries are ground to your desired consistency. You may need to stop the blender occasionally to check the consistency and scrape down the sides of the bin with a spatula to ensure even grinding.

Check the consistency: After a couple of minutes of blending, stop the blender and check the consistency of the ground wheat berries. If they're not finely ground enough, continue blending for additional time until you achieve the desired texture

Sift the ground wheat:  At this point you can opt to sift the ground wheat to remove the larger germ and ensure you have a fully ground flour.  I save the germ in a separate mason jar to use on top of bread or as a base in lieu of corn meal when baking sourdough.

StorageStore your freshly ground flour in an airtight container such as a mason jar for longevity and freshness.

Clean up: Wash the grain bin, blade assembly, and any other components that came into contact with the wheat berries thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Allow them to dry completely before storing or using them again.

By following these instructions, you can easily grind whole wheat berries into flour using the grain bin attachment on your Vitamix blender. Enjoy using your freshly ground wheat flour in your favorite recipes! I personally enjoy using my freshly ground flour for sourdough bread.
